Police tour enjoys big Latin American kickoff

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- The Police kicked off the South American leg of their reunion tour during the weekend with two packed shows in Buenos Aires that drew some 55,000 fans to the River Plate stadium. The performances were filmed for a live CD and DVD release planned for next year.

The Police reunion tour began in May in Vancouver and has played about 80 dates in North America and Europe, grossing more than $171 million. It was named the top-grossing and top ticket-selling tour of 2007 by Billboard in November.

The Buenos Aires shows -- with Beck as the opening act -- were the Police's first dates in Argentina in 27 years. The South American swing continues with a show in Santiago, Chile, before heading to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
