Donald Trump’s The Art of the Deal ghostwriter, Tony Schwartz, told MSNBC he has received a cease and desist letter from the chief legal officer of The Trump Organization.
“Yes, it is true. I got almost immediately that cease and desist letter delivered to me by FedEx. It’s nuts and completely indicative of who he is,” said Schwartz.
The letter comes after Schwartz told The New Yorker in a recent interview that he regrets his role in working with Trump on the memoir. He told The New Yorker, “I genuinely believe that if Trump wins and gets the nuclear codes there is an excellent possibility it will lead to the end of civilization.”
“There’s no basis in anything legal,” he continued. “I suspect that Donald Trump called up his chief legal person and said ‘go after that guy and do whatever you have to do.”
Schwartz confirmed to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow on Wednesday that the cease and desist letter asks that he return the royalty payments he has received for the book. Schwartz called the notion that he didn’t write the book “preposterous” and claimed that he almost didn’t finish writing the book.
“I had this inspiration, which was to ask him to let me sit in and listen on his phone calls so that I could try to piece together the deals that he was making from other people and that was the way I got the book done,” Schwartz said.
Schwartz said he doesn’t have a personal animosity towards the Republican presidential nominee, but describes Trump as having “no heart and no soul.”
“The idea that he would dispute that is part of why I felt had to come forward,” said Schwartz. “The notion about if he could lie about that, Rachel, he could lie about anything. If you look at the evidence of this campaign time after time after time that’s what’s happened.”
