Tom Brokaw and David Letterman discussed the upcoming election during Letterman’s in-depth interview for NBC News’ On Assignment.
Brokaw asked the former Late Show host if he ever wanted to get back on the air to talk about “one of the wackiest, potentially dislocating election years of our lifetime” with Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.
Letterman responded by talking about Trump. “I understand that he’s repugnant to people,” said Letterman. “But, you tell me, the men putting together the Constitution, witnessing this election, wouldn’t they have just said, ‘That’s part of the way we set it up. Good luck’?”
Brokaw responded that Letterman is right, Trump didn’t cheat by getting the Republican nomination.
“There’s nothing illegal going on,” said Letterman, “It’s just he’s despicable.” He added that in school students often hear that “the great thing about America is anybody can grow up to be President.” Letterman laughed and said, “Oh, jeez. I guess that might be true.”
The interview, filmed in Indianapolis over Memorial Day Weekend airs Sunday at 7 p.m. ET/PT. Clips from the interview have been trickling out, with one yesterday featuring Letterman talking about how he now “couldn’t care less” about late night television.
