Donald Trump went off script Wednesday during his second rally of the day in Florida when he mocked the NFL’s concussion rules, saying his supporters are much tougher than professional football players.
Trump made the comment after a woman in the crowd fainted at his afternoon rally in Lakeland.
“That woman was out cold, and now she’s coming back,” the GOP presidential nominee said to cheers. “We don’t go by these new, and very much softer, NFL rules. Concussions: ‘Oh, oh! [You] got a little ding on the head. No, no, you can’t play for the rest of the season.’ Our people are tough.”
There was instant backlash on social media about the seriousness of league’s concussion protocol, which has been stepped up in recent years to ensure player safety.
An official with the NFL Players’ Association declined to comment on Trump’s remarks.
