Brit Hume deleted a tweet on Wednesday that asserted that Democrats “don’t love” America after the Fox News senior political analyst misinterpreted a Gallup poll.
“I deleted an earlier tweet that said Democrats don’t love America. It was based on a Gallup poll that found only a minority of Dems now very proud of this country,” Hume wrote in a tweet. “A number of people said they think that’s not a fair conclusion from the poll. I agree and thus the deletion.”
In his original tweet, Hume posted a story from the blog Powerline that was titled, “Why Do Democrats Hate America?” and added, “Hate may be too strong a word but they sure don’t love it —>.”
After receiving backlash online, Hume clarified that he was referring to a Gallup poll published Monday that found that 32 percent of Democrats consider themselves “extremely proud” of being U.S. citizens, down from 56 percent in 2013. Seventy-four percent of Republicans called themselves “extremely proud” to be American, the highest the group has been in five years, according to the poll.
Overall, the poll found that a record low of 47 percent of respondents called themselves “extremely proud” to be Americans. Gallup attributed this decline to politics, particularly left-leaning groups’ feelings about President Donald Trump. Other issues currently at stake under the Trump administration, including guns, labor unions and the environment, could also be a factor, the organization said.
Hume was formerly ABC News chief White House correspondent and anchored Special Report With Brit Hume for Fox News. He now appears frequently on the network.
