The conservative guerrilla artist Sabo once again has prepared one of his distinctive graphic welcomes for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who will be in Los Angeles for a trio of big-money fundraisers Thursday.
This time, Sabo has papered parts of Bel Air, Holmby Hills and Pacific Palisades with a pair of posters, one of them a mocking takeoff of the animated film Shrek and the other a visual riff on a Game of Thrones promo. In the Shrek sendup, Clinton is called a “Shrew,” with her campaign mocked as “a Jeffrey Katzenberg production” amid a flurry of recent interviews with the studio executive’s political rep, who says Katzenberg has been busy raising money for Clinton. The second, HBO-like poster carries the words: “All Men Must Die.”
The artist told THR that his latest works are, in part, a protest against the Democrats’ deepening majority in California. “When an area, community, state has no diversity in political possibilitie, the politicians with the upper hand have no need to campaign, and the weaker party has no will or worry to bother,” he said. “In the end, we the people suffer because they stop trying to win our votes. There was a time the state was evenly divided, which forced them to campaign. These days, why bother?”
Sabo, who supports Republican candidate Ted Cruz and has depicted the Texas senator as one of the Avengers superheros, has lampooned Clinton twice before in Los Angeles street art.
On the eve of the former first lady and secretary of state’s formal announcement of her presidential candidacy in April, Sabo papered Motor Avenue near the Fox Studio lot with posters depicting Clinton in an Elizabethan gown and ornate ruff with a huge tiara on her head. The poster included a line that stated: “Hillary’s coronation begins April 12th on Twitter #mybirthright.”
Last year, before Clinton arrived for a Democratic midterm fundraiser at Tavern restaurant in Brentwood, the artist put up graphics that depicted Clinton’s supporters as the Wicked Witch’s flying monkeys from The Wizard of Oz.
As for his latest effort, Sabo told THR: “The neighborhoods I hit last night represent who is important to Hillary: Pacific Palisades, Holmby Hills, Bel Air, the Westside. It’s a good thing she doesn’t have to campaign within the lower class.”
While on the Westside this week, Clinton will be feted at a $2,700-per-person women’s breakfast at the Westwood home of Women’s Political Committee member Catherine Unger; a $2,700-per-person luncheon reception at the home of L.A. Law producer Steven Bochco in Pacific Palisades; and a $2,700-per-person evening reception at the Beverly Hills home of Haim and Cheryl Saban, with Casey Wasserman co-hosting.
