The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has called on the British government to cancel a state visit by President Donald Trump.
Speaking to Channel 4 news, Khan felt Trump’s out-of-context criticisms and continued attacks on Twitter meant that the U.K. should not “roll out the red carpet” for the president as “his policies go against everything we stand for.”
He added: “When you have a special relationship it is no different from when you have got a close mate. You stand with them in times of adversity but you call them out when they are wrong. There are many things about which Donald Trump is wrong.”

Khan’s and Trump’s feud dates back to the Paris attacks of November 2015, but was reignited after the London Bridge terrorist incident that killed seven and injured 48. After the attacks Khan said publicly that people should not be alarmed by the increased police presence in London. Taking Khan’s comments out of context, Trump tweeted on Sunday morning: “At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is ‘no reason to be alarmed!'”
Khan’s spokeswoman brushed off Trump’s initial criticism by saying that the mayor had “more important things to do than respond to Donald Trump’s ill-informed tweet.” The president doubled down on his criticism, tweeting Monday: “Pathetic excuse by London Mayor Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his ‘no reason to be alarmed’ statement. MSM is working hard to sell it!”
