On the heels of reports that the suspect behind the pipe bombs mailed to Democratic supporters and critics of President Donald Trump had a list of over 100 targets, Michael Avenatti is saying he was one of them.
“I was informed this afternoon by the FBI that I was targeted by Cesar Sayoc,” the attorney and vocal Trump critic tweeted Tuesday. “I applaud the hard working men and women of the FBI for his arrest and their continuing investigation. At some point, Trump will be held accountable for his role in the events of the last few weeks.”
Sayoc, a 56-year-old Florida resident, has been charged with five federal felonies after pipe bombs were sent to public figures including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, George Soros, John Brennan, James Clapper, Maxine Waters, Kamala Harris and Robert De Niro. Fourteen intercepted bombs have been attributed to the subject.
Sayoc made his first court appearance on Monday in Florida. If convicted, the suspect faces up to 48 years in prison.
Avenatti, the lawyer for porn star Stormy Daniels (nee Stephanie Clifford), faced a setback in his legal battle against Trump earlier this month when a federal judge ruled that the president had not defamed Daniels with a fiery tweet.
In recent months, Avenatti has also suggested that he’s considering a run for president in 2020 to challenge Trump.
