Social media was set ablaze Thursday afternoon when Rudy Giuliani gave a rambling press conference in which he inexplicably invoked My Cousin Vinny.
While once again claiming the 2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump — but offering no evidence of any fraud — the president’s personal attorney brought up the beloved 1992 comedy starring Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei.
Director Jonathan Lynn is aware of the random moment.
“I regard Giuliani’s praise of My Cousin Vinny as generous from the man who is currently giving the Comedy Performance of the Year,” Lynn tells The Hollywood Reporter.
During the presser, Giuliani asked at one point, “Did you all watch My Cousin Vinny? It’s one of my favorite law movies because he comes from Brooklyn.” From there, Giuliani went into the scene where Vinny asks a witness on the stand how many fingers he is holding up. The witness gets the answer wrong because she is too far away to see.
“These people were further away than My Cousin Vinny was from the witness,” he said, a reference to Republican poll watchers. “They couldn’t see a thing!”
The movie, along with Tomei (who won a best supporting actress Oscar for her role) began trending, with numerous fans quipping that the only fact Giuliani offered during the entire presser was that My Cousin Vinny is a great film.
