New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is getting involved in California’s Congressional District 33 race, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
De Blasio is endorsing Wendy Greuel in her quest to succeed U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman, who announced that he would be retiring this year after 40 years in Congress. The NYC mayor will also host a fundraiser for former DreamWorks executive Greuel at a Park Avenue club on May 20, according to sources. Audrey Gelman, Lena Dunham‘s friend and Girls muse, is expected to co-host the event, along with Alliance Hollywood founder Nomiki Konst.
With the June 3 primary election less than a month away, former L.A. mayoral candidate Greuel and seven other candidates are locked in a battle for endorsements and campaign funds. The hopefuls include State Senator Ted Lieu, author and inspirational speaker Marianne Williamson, Venice defense attorney David Kanuth, radio host Matt Miller and lawyers Elan Carr, Barbara Mulvaney and Tom Fox.
Greuel received early backing from her former DreamWorks’ bosses, Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen, and many of the industry people who supported her L.A. city campaigns over the years. (They include Rob Reiner, Ron Burkle, Howie Mandel, Jim Wiatt, Marta Kauffman and Michael Skloff, Monica and Phil Rosenthal, and Megan and Peter Chernin.)
Greuel is not the only Hollywood darling in the race, however. Willamson has racked up strong support in the entertainment industry. (Backers include Jane Lynch, Steven Tyler, Jason Mraz and Alanis Morissette.)
The top two vote-getters in the June primary will advance to the general election in November. Greuel’s campaign is being run by Michael Trujillo, a former Reiner political aide and current advisor to the Ready for Hillary super PAC.
