President Barack Obama, wife Michelle and his daughters took a trip to the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial in Washington D.C. on Friday, two days before he as was scheduled to speak at the dedication ceremony, Bloomberg reports.
Traveling by motorcade, the Obamas traveled from the White House to the memorial, located on the National Mall, before 8 p.m. The visit wasn’t on the president’s official schedule, which is available to the public.
The president will dedicate the first memorial honoring King and has said that the civil rights leader’s work made his current presidency a reality.
The memorial is a statue of King, carved in stone, and stands among memorials to former presidents: Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln.
King gave his “I have a dream” speech in 1963 in front of the Lincoln Memorial.
Obama is readying a trip to Los Angeles later this month for fundraising efforts.
