President Obama made a recent pit stop at a federal prison, and now there’s footage of it.
Vice and HBO released the trailer Friday for their upcoming special, VICE Special Report: Fixing The System, which examines the U.S. criminal justice system. In the nearly one-minute clip, the commander-in-chief is seen sitting down with inmates to listen to their stories. “We think it’s somehow normal for black youth or Latino youth to be through the system in this way,” he says. “It’s not normal.”
Hosted by Vice founder Shane Smith, the documentary features the president’s tour of Federal Correctional Institution, El Reno in Oklahoma, where he met with inmates and prison officials in July. The trip marks the first time a sitting president has visited a federal prison, and signals criminal justice reform as a top priority during the final stretch of his term.
Fixing The System will give viewers an in-depth look at America’s approach to crime and imprisonment and its pervasive impact, presenting interviews with prisoners and their families, along with judiciary and community reformers to chronicle the many interconnected parts of the sprawling system.
It’s Vice’s latest special in its ongoing coverage of what’s becoming a major civil rights issue in America, as the U.S. is home to only five percent of the world’s population but 25 percent of the world’s prison population.
Fixing The System airs Sunday, September 27 on HBO. Watch the trailer below:
