Rush Limbaugh on Kanye West’s Presidential Announcement: “What in the World?”

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh on Monday weighed in on Kanye West‘s VMAs announcement that the rapper planned to run for president in 2020.

Limbaugh first claimed West was “stoned,” according to audio posted by Mediaite, since the rapper admitted to “smoking something” before he accepted the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and then mocked the show, claiming MTV just “makes up these awards to get people onstage.”

But he was even more baffled by West’s announcement. Even though West said, “As you probably could’ve guessed by this moment” before he made his announcement, Limbaugh wondered how anyone would have thought West’s news was coming.

Limbaugh asked, “What in the world happened there that would make us conclude that that guy was running?”

“Was it when he said, ‘We gonna teach our kids to stand up for they self?’ ” the host added, mocking West’s grammar.

Limbaugh then quoted part of West’s speech in which he said, “We’re not gonna control our kids with brands. We not gonna teach low self-esteem and hate to our kids. We gonna teach our kids that they can be something.”

The host wondered, “How bad must it be that Kanye West thinks traditional child-raising is new?”

On the other side of the political spectrum, the Democratic party seems to be all for a West presidential run, tweeting through its official account on Monday, “Welcome to the race, Mr. West. Glad to have you.”

The Democratic National Committee later used Kanye gifs to criticize 2016 Republican candidates Marco Rubio and Scott Walker.

Meanwhile, White House press secretary Josh Earnest indicated that the Obama administration welcomes his run, telling the Associated Press that he looks “forward to seeing what slogan he chooses to embroider on his campaign hat,” potentially alluding to 2016 Republican candidate Donald Trump, who’s been sporting “Make America Great Again” hats.
