Trump Calls Oprah “Biased and Slanted” Over ’60 Minutes’ Voters Panel

It appears that Sunday night’s 60 Minutes was part of President Donald Trump’s TV-watching routine over the weekend.

The president took to Twitter late Sunday night to lambaste his once-friend Oprah Winfrey over a discussion she hosted with Michigan voters on CBS’ 60 Minutes. Winfrey reunited with a group of Grand Rapids voters to reassess the president after his first year in office.

Topics of conversation included Trump’s reported “shithole” countries remark, eroding views of America around the world under Trump and how some members of Congress, including Republicans, are questioning Trump’s stability and fitness for office.

Winfrey, who moderated the panel with six voters, also questioned why President Trump hasn’t been impacted by the #MeToo movement, despite having “some 20 women” accuse him of sexual harassment. “Do you think the president is held to a different standard when it comes to this issue of sexual harassment?” she asked, spurring debate among the group.

“Just watched a very insecure Oprah Winfrey, who at one point I knew very well, interview a panel of people on 60 Minutes,” read Trump’s tweet. “The questions were biased and slanted, the facts incorrect. Hope Oprah runs so she can be exposed and defeated just like all of the others!”

Speculation that Winfrey might throw her hat in the ring for 2020 hit a fever pitch after her rousing speech at the Golden Globes in January, where she declared “time is up” on women not being heard or believed when going up against powerful men.  

Trump himself had voiced support for Winfrey in the past, telling Larry King in 1999 that she would be his first choice for a running mate if he ran. “If she’d do it, she’d be fantastic. She’s popular, she’s brilliant, she’s a wonderful woman,” he had said. In 2015, shortly after announcing his candidacy, Trump told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that he thought he would “win easily” with her on his ticket. “I’d love to have Oprah,” he said.

Recently, however, Winfrey clarified that she will not be running for president. “I am actually humbled by the fact that people think that I could be a leader of the free world, but it’s just not in my spirit,” she said. “It’s not in my DNA.”
