U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson was on Monday moved to the intensive care unit of a London hospital after his coronavirus symptoms worsened.
The news came just a day after the 55-year-old was taken to St. Thomas’ Hospital following 10 days in self-isolating, having tested positive for COVID-19 on March 26.
“Since Sunday evening, the prime minister has been under the care of doctors at St Thomas’ Hospital, in London, after being admitted with persistent symptoms of coronavirus,” said a Downing Street spokesperson. “Over the course of this afternoon, the condition of the prime minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the intensive care unit at the hospital.”
According to The Guardian, Johnson was conscious and was being moved as a precaution in case he needed ventilation.
The British prime minister has asked foreign secretary Dominic Raab, who is the first secretary of state, to deputize for him where necessary.
