Former Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan has taken her talents from the ice to the campaign trail.
The five-time world champion is part of a 30-second ad for her husband, Clay Pell, in his bid to become the next governor of Rhode Island, with the specific aim of reaching out to female voters.

“One of the reasons I’m so excited about my husband Clay Pell’s candidacy is because Clay is committed to a women’s equality agenda that strengthens protection for women in areas like pay equity, sexual harassment and domestic violence,” 34-year-old Kwan says in the ad made by D.C. media firm Devine Mulvey Longabaugh.
“Clay knows Rhode Island can be ready for tomorrow by making it one of the best places for women to live and work,” continues the two-time Olympic medalist, who retired in 2006. “Clay believes what I believe: We need equality for all women.”

Pell has a family history in politics, as his grandfather was the late Sen. Claiborne Pell (D-R.I.). While Clay Pell is personally new to the campaign trail, the 32-year-old Democrat worked at the White House on President Barack Obama‘s national security team and in the Department of Education. He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard.
He will now face treasurer Gina Raimondo and Providence mayor Angel Taveras in the primary on September 9.
