Shortly after Donald Trump won the election last November, a surprising amount of donations were made to Planned Parenthood in the name of Vice President Mike Pence, a noted opponent of the organization. Many of the donations were actually made ironically by those who opposed Trump and his vp pick, an action that inspired app developer KeyG to do something similar.
“This was all inspired by Mike Pence,” said Collins. “There’s a lot of feeling out there with people who want to do things that are positive and funny and get the message across in a good way.”
Using KeyG’s latest “We the People” app, users can now create and share GIFs directly to the president and his cabinet members on Twitter. Utilizing the “head-on-body” technology that has been made popular by JibJab over the past decade, the app allows users to create humorous GIFs featuring the likenesses of Trump or his cabinet members dancing, cavorting, or participating in famous scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean or Harry Potter.
In addition to the comedic elements of the app, it also functions as a nonprofit, offering support to the ACLU, Sierra Club and Planned Parenthood. The app gives users the option to donate to either of the three organizations upon creation of their GIF, and has already received support from Planned Parenthood, which has tweeted a GIF created through the app.
“We did this as a labor of love,” KeyG CEO Rich Collins told The Hollywood Reporter. “We wanted to do something that was positive and humorous. We felt those three areas would be most under attack with the new administration: civil liberties, the environment and women’s rights.”
Once a GIF is created, an option is presented for users to tweet either to Trump directly or his cabinet members such as Vice President Mike Pence or counselor Kellyanne Conway, as well as Democratic leaders Sen. Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi. They are then offered a chance to donate to their choice of the three organizations mentioned.
The app also features a curated “best-of” selection of other users’ creations. KeyG’s app can be downloaded for free on iTunes or Google Play.
