Prime Focus Adds New 3D Conversion Facility

Leading VFX Player Awarded $44 million Contract from Hollywood Studio

NEW DELHI -- Leading Mumbai-based VFX player Prime Focus announced the opening of its latest facility based in Chandigarh, about 150 miles north of New Delhi, which expands the company's 2D to stereo 3D conversion capacity.

In addition to its facilities in other Indian cities such as Hyderabad, Bangalore, Goa and Chennai, Prime Focus also has a strong U.K. and U.S. presence which was established via acquisitions of existing VFX companies.

The 50,000-square-foot Chandigarh facility will open on December 25 and employ 3,000 artists who will work on global projects, utilizing Prime Focus's digital pipeline connecting its Indian facilities to North America and the U.K. Prime Focus already employs over 2,250 people at its facilities in India and overseas.

“Our new facility in Chandigarh is a major expansion of our View-D 2D to stereo 3D conversion capacity. Prime Focus has always wanted to mark its presence in northern India, considering our existing strong presence in western and southern India. Chandigarh is an ideal location due to its huge student population, many of whom are looking to establish a career in animation and VFX," Prime Focus co-founder and chief creative director Merzin Tavaria said.

Prime Focus's View-D is a proprietary 2D to stereo 3D conversion system for which its North American affiliate has filed an application for a U.S. patent.

Prime Focus's recent projects included 3D conversion services for The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader which opened in India on December 3, a week ahead of the film's U.S. release.

Recently, Prime Focus announced it was awarded a multiple-title order worth about 2 billion rupees ($44 million) for 2D to 3D stereoscopic conversion “from a leading Hollywood studio to be executed in the next 30-36 months” with the work being farmed out between PF's various facilities in India and overseas. But when asked, the company declined to name the studio citing a non-disclosure agreement.

Since its 1995 launch, Prime Focus has offered visual effects and post production services for numerous Bollywood projects including major recent releases such as Guzaarish, Raavan, Housefull, My Name Is Khan and Blue. Prime Focus' international credits include Hollywood projects such as Avatar, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Resident Evil: Afterlife and The A-Team.
