Scout Productions' inaugural slate includes ‘Equal’ for HBO Max and ‘Get Real’ for Quibi.

Queer Eye maestros Scout Productions are investing in documentary. The Emmy and Oscar-winning production company announced Tuesday that it's launched a new doc division, with the intention of extending its unscripted footprint.

Documentary projects already in the pipeline include HBO Max four-part series Equal, which chronicles the pre-Stonewall LGBTQ rights movement, and Quibi's reality TV history Get Real. “Digging into the legacy and history of Equal has inspired us to return to our roots," said Scout co-founder Mchael Williams. "Scout’s authentic, point-of-view storytelling is a perfect fit for the documentary space whether we are talking about the world of music or taking a closer look at the history of our collective obsession with reality TV."

Leading the new division is Joel Chiodi, Scout senior vice president strategic development. He will oversee day-to-day content development and production, reporting to Scout chief creative officer Rob Eric, Scout’s Chief Creative Officer.

“Whether it’s the heroes featured on Queer Eye or the changemakers that led the charge in the Stonewall Riots, Scout’s unique form of storytelling sheds light on the real-life stories of people not typically seen on TV," said Chiodi. "We are excited to expand our unscripted content into a documentary slate that uncovers the people who make the world a brighter, better place and continue to deliver premiere content to our partners and, most importantly, our fans."

On top of Equal and Get Real, Scout is developing and pitching a slate of docs including projects with Ian Bonhote (McQueen) and Tommy Avallone (The Bill Murray Stories), as well as a tongue in cheek look at the candy industry and an investigate piece on the self-help world with journalist Nile Cappello.

Chiodi is an executive producer on Equal and has contributed to both Legendary and Queer Eye.
