Celebrity hair guru Mark Townsend spills all.

She missed out on the best female lead trophy at the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday, but Rachel McAdams was a clear winner in the style and beauty categories. Her Solace London gown was equal parts polished and easygoing. Likewise, her hair was pulled together yet playful thanks in large part to an ultrachic accessory.

Mark Townsend — hairstylist to McAdams as well as Dakota Johnson, Jennifer Lawrence and all three Olsen girls — wanted to create a fresh, casual look for the daytime event. He tells Pret-a-Reporter, "Ever since I got my hands on this Elizabeth and James hair accessory [it will be out in the fall], I’ve been dying to use it. Rachel loved it, and it seemed like the perfect occasion to do it."

The piece in question is the new Aldona Hairpin, plated in 24k gold. It’s part of a new line of gold hairpins that’s in Elizabeth and James’ fall 2016 jewelry collection, in stores in July. Beyond showing off the minimalist pin, Townsend says, "I was excited to show that you don’t have to have long hair to pull off a half up ‘do. Rachel’s bob looked incredible pulled half back with a few pieces left out in the front."

The mane guru adds that although the look was natural, he always blows out the hair to make it smooth and shiny — in this case with Dove Regenerative Nourishment Serum-in-Oil ($6) both on her damp and dry hair — before adding texture (for this event with John Masters Organics Sea Salt Spray with Lavender, $16.50). His other tip: "I always use bobby pins coated in dry shampoo to give that extra hold and grit to keep accessories in."
