RAI Screenings move to Sardinia

ROME -- The 12th edition of RAI Trade Screenings, the annual sales event for RAI, Italy's state broadcaster, will be held on the island of Sardinia, RAI Trade sales director Sesto Cifola said Friday. The official announcement will take place later this month.

It will be the first time the exclusive invitation-only event -- which will run April 11-13 -- will be held on Sardinia, where it will be hosted by the Forte Village Resort on the southern shore of the island. The previous four editions have been held in the Sicilian village of Taormina. Prior to that, the Amalfi coast and the port village of Portofino hosted the event.

According to Cifola, the event will feature more than 200 buyers from about 80 countries, representing more than 100 companies.

They will have access to screenings of hundreds of RAI films, television series, miniseries, animations, documentaries, cultural shows and sports programming. About 100 locations will be set up for the digital screening of products.

"This is the single best opportunity for buyers from around the world to sample the various products RAI has to offer," Cifola said. "Sales from RAI Trade Screenings add up to more than 50% of RAI's income each year, so it's a very important event, and this is going to be or best version yet because of the variety of participants."

Cifola said that the event is growing by expanding to Eastern Europe and Russia as well as Asia, with large delegations from both India and the Philippines expected. Increased participation from Middle Eastern countries also is expected, Cifola said.

"A lot of deals are started here and then closed at MIP or in Cannes," Cifola said.

RAI Trade Screenings is one of the most important -- and luxurious -- events on the Italian calendar. This year, after three days at the Forte Village Resort, 160 participants will be shuttled off to Nice via chartered jet.
