Rapid Eye nabs rights to 'Peepli Live'

Company set to bow Indian film in Germany in third quarter

BERLIN -- Asian cinema specialists Rapid Eye Movies have picked up all German rights for Berlinale Special title "Peepli Live," Anusha Rizvi's directorial debut and the first Indian film to ever screen in Sundance.

More Berlin coverage

Rapid Eye plans to bow "Peepli" theatrically in Germany in the third quarter of this year. Described as a "comic gem," the feature is a satire of the real-life epidemic of farmer suicides in rural India.

"(This is) a true Indian art house film that entertains whilst telling a serious story," Rapid Eye boss Stephan Holl said.

"Peepli Live" was produced by Aamir Khan and UTV Motion Pictures. The Berlinale Special gala for "Peepli Live" is on Thursday.
