'[REC]2' tops Spanish boxoffice

Horror sequel highest-grossing of 2009 so far

MADRID -- Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza's "[REC]2" became Spain's highest-grossing opening weekend for a Spanish film this year with €2.2 million at the boxoffice on 356 screens.

The latest Spanish scare fare bowed Thursday in Spain at the Sitges International Film Festival. It displaced "Mentiras y Gordas," which earned €1.8 million in its opening weekend on 214 screens, as the top opening for Spanish film in 2009.

Horror film "[REC]2" is produced and sold by Barcelona-based mini-studio Filmax and is the follow-up to 2007's [REC].
