'Recount' redo: Pollack out, Roach in

Sydney Pollack has pulled out of directing HBO Films' "Recount" because of unspecified medical reasons.

Jay Roach has come on board to helm the film, a co-production with Spring Creek/Mirage Prods., which chronicles the dramatic recounts in Florida after the 2000 presidential election.

Pollack will stay on as an executive producer alongside Spring Creek's Paula Weinstein and HBO Films' Len Amato.

Written by Danny Strong, "Recount" goes behind the headlines to explore the human drama of ordinary people caught in extraordinary events that would impact the leadership of the country.

The film remains targeted for a 2008 premiere.

Roach is best known for directing the "Austin Powers" and "Meet the Parents" feature comedy franchises.
