Red Carpet Doughnuts Are a New Thing

Thank you, Astro.

While the Oscar nominations aren’t out until next week, one thing is for certain about this awards season: the finalists (and fans) will be able to have their cake and eat it too.

Downtown Los Angeles’ hipper-than-thou Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken has just debuted the extremely sparkly and very social-media friendly Red Carpet Doughnut. The red velvet-flavored treats, coated in a gold glaze, cost $5 each and are available by advanced online and phone orders now through the March 4 Oscars (they’ll be available in store the weekend of the ceremony).

The shiny spheres are the latest dessert interpretation of a Hollywood talking point. Earlier this month, Sprinkles unveiled a Times Up-themed cupcake and promises to give all proceeds from its sales to the movement’s legal defense fund. (Never mind that most of Hollywood's leading ladies wouldn't be caught dead letting a sugary, carb-laden treat touch their lips, particularly during red carpet season.)

Those who think of doughnuts as more Super Bowl crowd appropriate will be happy to know that Astro also has a Game Day package for the February 4 showdown. They’re offering six football-shaped Boston crème doughnuts and 24 honey Sriracha or Korean barbecue-style wings for $59.95.

For anyone wondering what we’ll be wearing to either event, the answer is crumbs.
