Regent Releasing picks up 'Song of Sparrows'

Majid Majidi's drama hits U.S. theaters this spring

NEW YORK -- Iran's foreign-language feature Oscar entry "The Song of Sparrows" is heading to U.S. theaters this spring from Regent Releasing.

Majid Majidi's drama focuses on an ostrich farmer whose firing leads him to Tehran. His new job as a motorcycle taxi driver and big city life threaten to change his honest nature.

Majidi, whose "Children of Heaven" received a 1997 Oscar nomination for best foreign language feature, produced, directed and co-wrote the film. It was nominated for a Golden Bear award this year after its Berlin fest premiere. Following recent Toronto titles "Tokyo Sonata" and "Serbis," "Sparrows" is Regent's latest pickup outside the mainly gay-themed fare it acquires for sister cable channel Here!

Regent's Mark Reinhart negotiated the deal with Fortissimo Films' Winnie Lau.
