Berlin balancing act amid recession

BERLIN -- Indian production and finance company Reliance Big Pictures is launching an international sales division at the European Film Market.

The company's international distribution chief, Jawahar Sharma, will head the startup sales division and has brought in former Miramax executive Colleen Seldin to consult.

Buyers will be lured by a slate of titles including the $30 million-budgeted English-language "Kites," produced by Rakesh Roshan and directed by Anurag Basu.

In addition to its upcoming English-language efforts, Big Pictures also has 18 films lined up in seven different Indian languages.

To date, Reliance has relied on self-distribution and agency deals, including such key markets as North America, the U.K. and the United Arab Emirates and will continue with that in those territories.

The sales division aims to secure deals for Reliance titles in all other markets.

While much of Big Pictures' output will be in Hindi and other Indian languages, the company also plans "several English-language tentpoles each year."
