The Canadian distributor plans a 2013 release for the Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth starrer.

TORONTO – Canadian distributor Remstar Films has picked up the Canadian rights to Atom Egoyan's feature take on the case of the West Memphis Three, Devil's Knot, which stars Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth.

Montreal-based Remstar plans a 2013 domestic release for the film that delves into the brutal 1993 Arkansas murders of three eight-year-old boys, for which Jessie Misskelley Jr., Damien Echols and Jason Baldwin were ultimately convicted.

The deal with CAA, which handles the North American rights on Devil’s Knot, will see Entertainment One handle rights in all media for the film in Canada in partnership with Remstar, excluding theatrical, VOD and French-language TV rights in Quebec.

Based on Mara Leveritt's nonfiction book Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three, the film follows the imprisoned trio’s legal fight to prove their innocence and obtain their freedom.

Following 18 years in jail, the three men were released in August 2011.

Devil’s Knot, a Fowler-Saperstein-Peterson Production financed and produced by Worldview Entertainment, also stars Dane DeHaan and Amy Ryan.

Directed by Egoyan, the feature is written by Paul Harris Boardman and Scott Derrickson.
