Hollywood Slams Rex Reed for Attacking Melissa McCarthy's Weight
“Turns out, Rex Reed didn't die sad and alone 10 years ago,” tweeted “Modern Family” star Eric Stonestreet.
The critic continues to become the critiqued as the New York Observer’s Rex Reed faces backlash over his review of Identity Thief, in which he mocks Melissa McCarthy's weight, in addition to panning the film.
In his review, Reed calls McCarthy "tractor-sized," a "screeching, humongous creep" and a "female hippo." He characterizes the actress’ career, which includes an Emmy win for Mike & Molly and an Oscar nomination for Bridesmaids, as a study in "being obese and obnoxious with equal success."
Reed was swiftly rebuked in the comments section of the Observer, as well as on Twitter, where people questioned whether the 74-year-old critic would have made similar comments about a male actor’s weight.
Bridesmaids director Paul Feig tweeted:"For his catty and school bully name-calling of the supremely talented Melissa McCarthy, I cordially invite Mr. Rex Reed to go f--- himself."
McCarthy’s film, which also stars Jason Bateman, is doing strong business at the box office, eyeing a better-than-anticipated $34.8 million opening weekend. Though the film received poor reviews, a number of critics joined actors and comedians in rebuking Reed for his attack on McCarthy.
Below are some of Hollywood’s recent tweets about the incident:
Modern Family’s Eric Stonestreet:
“Turns out, Rex Reed didn't die sad and alone 10 years ago. Nope. He's alive and starving for attention, so lets give him some.”
NCIS actor Brian Dietzen:
“Melissa McCarthy is one of the funniest actors working today. She is brilliant. Rex Reed is not.”
House of Lies actor Ben Schwartz:
Emmy-winning actor Chad Lowe (brother of Rob Lowe):
Comedian Lauren Ashley Bishop:
“hey rex reed, women aren't in movies solely for your visual pleasure. you are a pig & a terrible reviewer now that we're at it”
Comedian Becky Donohue:
"Writer calls McCarthy a 'hippo.' She's also THE funniest thing on earth. Would reviewer have said it about John Candy?"
Film critic Jackon Murphy:
“Rex Reed calling Melissa McCarthy "tractor-sized" and "hippo" in "Identity Thief" review is just wrong. #1 Rule - no personal attacks.”
NPR pop culture blogger Linda Holmes:
"The thing about Rex Reed is I don't care."
Film critic Scott Weinberg:
“Is it still offensive to call someone an "old queen"? Because I want to call Rex Reed that but I don't want to offend anyone except him.”
Film critic Jordan Hoffman:
“I encourage piling on Rex Reed but if your primary diss is "you're old!" you're as bad as he is.”
Comedy producer Roland Scahill:
“Regarding the Rex Reed / Melissa McCarthy controversy, those who can do get nominated for Oscars & those who can't end up writing reviews”
