Richard Dreyfuss' Son Claims Kevin Spacey Groped Him While His Father Was in the Room
"[W]hat disgusts me about Kevin was how safe he did feel. He knew he could fondle me in a room with my father and that I wouldn't say a word. And I didn't," the actor wrote in a column for Buzzfeed News.
Harry Dreyfuss, son of Richard Dreyfuss, has come forward to share his own experience with Kevin Spacey, who has been accused of harassment and assault by over 10 men.
In a guest column for Buzzfeed News, the first publication to surface sexual misconduct allegations against Spacey, Dreyfuss revealed that he was inappropriately groped while his father was present in the room.
Dreyfuss claims the incident took place in 2008, when Spacey was directing Richard in the play Complicit at London's Old Vic theater. He was 18 years old at the time.
"It happened one night when the three of us were alone in Kevin's apartment rehearsing my father's lines. My father didn't see, and I didn't tell him about the incident for many years," Dreyfuss said. "Instead, I spent the next nine years telling people the story at parties for laughs."
He added, "Kevin Spacey is a sexual predator. But I still never thought talking about it seriously was ever an option."
Dreyfuss wrote that as a shy teenager, he admired Spacey and mistook some of his advances as friendly behavior. Dreyfuss became suspicious of Spacey only when he sat down next to him and placed his hand on his thigh as the three of them went over the script.
"It took that long because it just never occurred to me that Kevin would be interested in me in the first place. He was an adult man, a hero of mine, my dad's boss, none of which were categories on my radar for sexual interactions," the young actor said. "Besides, I thought, Surely he can't be coming on to me like this right in front of my dad. But his hand stayed there."
Dreyfuss made several attempts to move to a different seat and get away from Spacey, but the House of Cards star relentlessly followed him and slid his hand onto Dreyfuss' thigh.
"I was unable to process what was happening: My dad and I were pretending to be lovers in a play while Kevin Spacey was trying to seduce me and all the while in real life I was a hapless, straight virgin who just wanted to become a famous actor," he wrote. "I didn't think there was anything I could do short of alerting my dad to what was happening. But I didn't want to start a feud between them. I didn't want the play to be threatened."
Dreyfuss noted he tried to downplay the situation by telling himself Spacey was doing nothing wrong, until Spacey reached further and groped his crotch.
"Over the course of about 20 seconds, centimeter by centimeter, Kevin crawled his hand from my thigh over toward my crotch. My mind went blank. Suddenly, he had completed his journey and now he had all of me in his hand," he said, adding that he never once "gave him a signal that I would want to be with him in that way."
Dreyfuss concluded his column by saying he felt compelled to tell his story in the wake of numerous men and women coming forward to condemn abuse of power by prominent men in Hollywood.
"Now having had nine years to process it, it finally is clear to me how wrong Kevin's behavior was," he wrote. "In retrospect, what disgusts me about Kevin was how safe he did feel. He knew he could fondle me in a room with my father and that I wouldn't say a word. He knew I wouldn't have had the guts. And I didn't."
His father, Richard, supported his son's decision to come forward by tweeting, "I love my son @harrydreyfuss more than I could explain with all the words in the world. And I am so incredibly proud of him right now."
Dreyfuss' allegation comes one day after a new accuser told Buzzfeed News that Spacey groped him at a club and another claimed he played gay pornography for him when he visited his home as a teenager.
On Friday night, Netflix announced Spacey has been booted from House of Cards, which suspended production indefinitely in light of the allegations.
"Netflix will not be involved with any further production of House of Cards that includes Kevin Spacey. We will continue to work with MRC during this hiatus time to evaluate our path forward as it relates to the show," a Netflix representative said in a statement.
The Old Vic also released a statement in the wake of the claims: 'We are deeply dismayed to hear the allegations levied against Kevin Spacey. Inappropriate behavior by anyone working at The Old Vic is completely unacceptable. We aim to foster a safe and supportive environment without prejudice, harassment or bullying of any sort."
Spacey is being investigated by London police over an allegation of sexual assault dating back to 2008.
