Richard Jenkins on Guillermo del Toro and 'The Shape of Water' | Meet Your Nominees

'The Shape of Water' received 13 Oscar nominations.

The Shape of Water star Richard Jenkins opens up to The Hollywood Reporter about becoming fast friends with Sally Hawkins and how Guillermo del Toro personally reached out to him for the role of Giles.

Del Toro told him, according to Jenkins, "'I want you to please read this script. I hope you love it as much as I do.' I emailed him the next morning, and I said, 'I think I do.'"

Jenkins spoke about working with the "monster" in the movie, played by Doug Jones. For one scene, he said, "before we started shooting, Doug was sitting in the bathtub, and he was just a guy in a fish suit sitting in a bathtub. And I thought, 'This movie doesn't have a chance. This is not working.' And then they said 'Action,' and he just changed," Jenkins said, which is when the cast was onboard.

On working with Hawkins, Jenkins couldn't help but rave about the best actress nominee.

"We had a week and a half, maybe two weeks of rehearsal, but we used it to become friends," Jenkins explained. "I just love her. I said to her, 'You're my friend now. There's nothing you can do about it.' We just had a great time, and we laughed a lot."

The Shape of Water is up for 13 nominations at the 90th Academy Awards, which will take place on March 4, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
