Rihanna Does Rei Kawakubo Proud at the 2017 Met Gala
RiRi never disappoints.
Two years after the infamous Guo Pei gown moment at the 2015 Met Gala, Rihanna arrived at this year's bash in New York wearing a dress by the evening's honoree, Comme des Garcons designer Rei Kawakubo.
Longtime stylist Mel Ottenberg styled the look, which includes a fall 2016 pouf gown dotted with scraps and petals of fabric, like remnants of CDG collections past, with red gladiator heels that wrap all the way up to her thighs. A sky-high bun and intense red eye makeup — a beauty look likely inspired by Kawakubo's spring 1997 runway show — completed the head-turning look.
This year's gala theme celebrates the museum's Costume Institute exhibition "Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between," which features approximately 150 womenswear designs that Kawakubo has created for Japanese brand Comme des Garcons since her first presentation at Paris Fashion Week in 1981.
In true Rihanna style, the pop star took the avant garde theme and ran with it, hitting fashion's biggest red carpet of the year in a look that sets her apart in the best possible way.
