NYFW Party Recap, Day 1: Rihanna Parties With Her Mom and Grandpa
Forget Marc Jacobs' enforced disco dress code of "fur coats over lingerie" and sequins.
New York Fashion Week officially kicked off on Thursday night with a slew of shindigs, but it was Rihanna's Block Party, held at the Edition Hotel, that topped them all.
The songstress made sure her evening was by far the most star-studded, bringing in guests like Kanye West, Kim Kardashian and Wiz Khalifa, as well as couple Gigi Hadid and Joe Jonas, who held hands and whispered to each other throughout the evening. As for the evening's hostess, Rihanna arrived around 10:30 p.m., wearing a white velvet dress and navy blue lipstick, and was greeted by a screaming mob of fans outside the hotel while carrying her own umbrella, prompting a few of those standing in the rain to attempt their own version of the singer's hit song "Umbrella." This garnered a smile from Rihanna as she entered the hotel.
While the singer's rumored boyfriend, Travis Scott, may have been present that evening (the couple left together as well), he wasn't her only date for the evening: Rihanna's grandfather and mother were also in attendance and stayed close to her side, making the evening a hard-partying family affair. Also in attendance, besides Chris Rock, Fabolous and Jeremy Scott, was Rihanna's close pal, Justin Timberlake, who was not accompanied by wife Jessica Biel, but instead a rather burly bodyguard, who on multiple occasions got mean with more than one photographer about taking pictures of Timberlake who was trying to keep an extremely low (if not completely invisible) profile. "You have to delete those NOW!" he yelled at one of many enterprising snappers.

Other events that deserve a nod for their innovation include Marc Jacobs' party at Tunnel, celebrating Gloss, the works of Chris Von Wangenheim, which enforced a very strict dress code, including things like "fur coats over lingerie," sequins, "mini skirts and muscular legs," bleached eyebrows, and "riding in on a white horse." No natural looks were welcome.
Topshop and W magazine celebrated Ciara as the brand's new U.S. ambassador with a party at Sant Ambroeus Soho, where supermodel Iman popped in to give the singer a kiss on the cheek, and winning perhaps the largest party award of the evening, Refinery 29 hosted a NYFW party that included 29 Rooms, with a different art installation in every one, varying from smoke machines to painted cakes by fashion cake stylist Amirah Kassem. The R29 event brought out Drew Barrymore, Solange and Alexa Chung.
