Rivals team for mobile TV trial

Three month consumer trial to start with Beijing Olmypics

SINGAPORE -- In a rare moment of unity, Singapore’s three pay-TV and telecom rivals have teamed up with the country’s monopoly free-TV network, MediaCorp, for a mobile TV trial set to begin with the Beijing Olympics.

SingTel, StarHub and M1 said the three-month consumer trial would offer six channels, including CNBC, The History Channel and a Cantonese movie channel from Hong Kong’s Mei Ah. Content  also will include Barclays Premier League football, the companies said in statement Friday.

The partnership comes in the middle of a fierce battle between SingTel and StarHub for pay-TV subscribers. On Wednesday, SingTel announced a first-of-its-kind deal with three U.S. studios for 50 series on-demand for its Mio TV IPTV platform.

Singapore is expected to announce a regulatory framework for mobile broadcasting by the end of the year.
