Robert Carlyle made Edinburgh patron

Joins Sean Connery and Tilda Swinton

LONDON -- Robert Carlyle has joined Sean Connery and Tilda Swinton as a patron of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, organizers said Tuesday.

Carlyle, invited by Connery to join him and Tilda Swinton in the honorary role, accepted shortly after this year's event closed Sunday.

EIFF artistic director Hannah McGill described Carlyle as "a loyal supporter of the festival and a passionate advocate for the domestic industry."

Said Carlyle, "It was a great honor to be asked by Sir Sean, and I am delighted to become a Patron of the EIFF -- a festival that showcases the best of Scottish, British and international filmmaking."
