Robert De Niro to Receive GLAAD Award
The Oscar winner will receive GLAAD's Excellence in Media Award, which recognizes media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting equality and acceptance.
Robert De Niro is about to add another award to his collection.
The two-time Oscar winner will be recognized by the GLAAD Media Awards in May, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
De Niro will receive the group's Excellence in Media Award, which recognizes media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting equality and acceptance. The actor will be honored at the 27th annual ceremony, set to take place May 14 at the Waldorf Astoria New York.
Previous recipients include Kelly Ripa, Russell Simmons, Tyra Banks, Judy Shepard, Julianne Moore, Glenn Close, Barbara Walters, Bob and Harvey Weinstein, Diane Sawyer and Vanessa Redgrave.
Among his many contributions to the LGBT community, De Niro most recently appeared in the 2014 HBO documentary Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro, Sr., in which he opened up about his gay father's struggle with self-acceptance and his inability to live an open life until his later years. Other notable works include his 1999 film Flawless, about a man's friendship with a transgender woman, and 2007's Stardust, in which De Niro played an openly gay character.
“Through his work honoring the memory of his openly gay father, Robert De Niro has not only sent a message of acceptance to LGBT people, but also educated audiences of the harms of anti-LGBT prejudice and discrimination,” GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement. “He is a tireless advocate who has helped bring to the world LGBT storylines that spark dialogue, build support and encourage understanding.”
Additional guests and honorees for the New York ceremony will be announced at a later date. De Niro will next be seen in the boxing film Hands of Stone, which is set to bow in August.
