The live-action series will be available via STX's VR app, which is set to launch in mid-2018.

Robert Rodriguez has wrapped production on a live-action virtual reality series, The Limit, starring Michelle Rodriguez.

The shortform series, which hails from STXsurreal, the VR division of STX Entertainment, will be released via the company's VR app, Surreal, which is scheduled to launch in mid-2018.

Written, directed and produced by Robert Rodriguez, The Limit is a first-person action series that follows Michelle Rodriguez as she plays a genetically enhanced weapon of mass destruction who tries to destroy the covert agency that created her. It was co-written by Racer Max.

Production on the project began in late January at Robert Rodriguez's Double R Productions in Austin, Texas. The native VR experience was produced using a VR format that bridges traditional wide-screen and 360-degree video.

"I'm a huge fan of VR, and I started Double R Productions with Racer Max to create innovative content for the medium," Robert Rodriguez said in a statement, adding that working with the Surreal team "is a great way to kick things off."

STXsurreal co-president Rick Rey called The Limit "a new format that delivers a blockbuster, lean-back cinematic experience that audiences can't find anywhere else in the VR marketplace right now." Added co-president Andy Vick, "By assembling entertainment's most-sought-after writers, directors and actors we have a shot at changing the VR industry, and the combination of Robert and Michelle is a perfect example of what STX is cooking up."

Robert Rodriguez, who is repped by WME and attorney David Fox, most recently co-wrote, directed and produced Alita: Battle Angel. Michelle Rodriguez, who is repped by WME, Untitled Entertainment and Greenberg Traurig, will next be seen in Alita: Battle Angel and Steve McQueen's Widows.
