Romania Box Office: Admissions Hit 14-Year High in 2014; Third 'Hobbit' Is Highest-Grossing Film

The final installment in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy didn't open until December, so it will continue to do strong business into the new year. The epic, featuring stunning battle scenes, has been conquering international markets over the holidays, earning $405.1 million abroad to date. It's also topped the domestic box office for its first two weeks, earning $183.5 million to date.

Total box office was up 18 percent from the previous year.

Romania’s box office was on the rise in 2014, while the number of admissions hit a 14-year high and Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies was the year’s top-grossing movie.

Last year, the number of admissions reached 10.1 million, the best performance since 2001, according to the data base

The total box office in 2014 was $48 million (186.4 million lei), up 18 percent from the previous year.

The third installment in Peter Jackson's Hobbit saga, which grossed $2.7 million (10.5 million lei), was the year's box office champion and Romania's highest-grossing movie in five years.

It was followed by Interstellar ($1.5 million, or 5.9 million lei) and 300: Rise of an Empire ($1.4 million, or 5.5 million lei).

Not a single Romanian film made it to the top 50 highest-grossing movies.
