'Rookie Blue' top-rated series on Canuck TV

Canadian cop drama pulls in 1.8 million total viewers

TORONTO – It happens only in a generation.

The local drama "Rookie Blue" on Global Television is the top-rated show on Canadian TV.

BBM Canada reports the Canadian cop drama from Thump Inc. and E1 Entertainment, which airs on ABC stateside, pulled in 1.8 million total viewers last Thursday night at 9 p.m.

That beat out "Big Brother 12" on Wednesday night, also on Global Television, which drew 1.77 million total viewers.

ABC and Canadian broadcaster Canwest Global Communications Corp. have renewed "Rookie Blue" for a second season (HR, July 12).

In a Canadian market dominated by U.S. dramas, comedies and reality series, Canuck shows are lucky to break into the top-20 table.

"Rookie Blue," which is shot in Toronto, bowed on June 24 on Global Television and ABC and immediately drew 2 million viewers here in a market where 1 million viewers represents a hit series.

Other top-performing series on Canadian TV: "Big Brother 12" on Sunday night drew 1.76 million viewers, and "Hot in Cleveland" on CTV on Monday night grabbed 1.64 million viewers.
