Rosario Dawson Guys Choice Awards Arrivals - H 2014

Studio One Eighty Nine's Dawson and partner Abrima Erwiah will be feted at the opening of the Sicilian festival.

The Taormina Film Fest continues its support of global women's issues by honoring Rosario Dawson and Abrima Erwiah, co-founders of Studio One Eighty Nine. They’ll receive the Taormina Humanitarian Award at the opening ceremony of the festival on June 13, at the city’s landmark Greek theater.

Dawson and Erwiah started Studio One Eighty Nine as an online platform dedicated to promoting African culture and projects. The organization has partnered with the United Nations International Trade Center Ethical Fashion Initiative to invest in social economic development in local communities.

Studio One Eighty Nine's Fashion Rising Collection recently partnered with Vogue Italia and to launch an exclusive capsule collection to benefit Fashion 4 Development. All objects are handmade in Africa, promoting African tradition and supporting local artisans. Local cottons are mixed with Italian silks in bright colors for a purely original line.

A new partnership with Opening Ceremony features batik prints hand-dyed in Mali and Ghana with techniques passed down through generations. Proceeds go directly back into the artisan communities that create the lines in order to support local economies.

The 61st Taormina Film Fest runs June 13-20.
