In a cash-and-shares deal, RTL will increase its stake in its Belgium division to 100 percent.

European broadcast giant RTL Group has signed a deal to take full control of its Belgium division RTL Belgium.

The cash-and-shares deal, announced Tuesday, will boost RTL Group's stake in RTL Belgium to 100 percent.

RTL Group has long been the majority shareholder in the company, which operates three free-TV channels— general-interest network RTL-TVI, kids, sports, and classic music and series specialty channel Club RTL, and youth-focused network Plug RTL— in French-speaking Belgium.

In 2019, RTL Belgium's TV channels attracted a combined 34.5 percent audience share in the key commercial target demographic, making the group the leading commercial broadcaster in the territory. RTL Belgium also operates three radio stations, a streaming service (RTL PLay), and a news website, RTLInfo.be.

Elmar Heggen, chief operating officer and deputy CEO of RTL Group said the acquisition of RTL Belgium "follows our strategy to consolidate across our European broadcasting footprint, wherever attractive opportunities arise. We will continue to invest in RTL Belgium and accelerate the transformation of the business, in particular via streaming services, advertising technology, and data."
