RTL, UFA do 'Dallas' with German series

'Der Clan' to be a rich-family primetime series

ZURICH -- Germany's top network and the country's largest production company are teaming up to produce "Der Clan," a rich-family primetime series similar to "Dallas" or "Dynasty."

The series, which Grundy UFA will produce for commercial broadcaster RTL Television, is the latest in a new wave of German drama series that are taking on U.S. imports. RTL recently ordered new seasons of homegrown action series "Lasko" and "Countdown." Competitor Sat.1 has scored a hit with its German-language crime drama "The Last Cop," produced by Granada's German production shingle.

RTL and Grundy have begun shooting the pilot for "Der Clan," which instead of Dallas or Denver, will be set in Dusseldorf, home to the rich but unscrupulous Kent family.

Grundy already produces several shows for RTL, including hit daily soaps "Good Times, Bad Times" and "Unter Uns."

Both the network and the production company are controlled by German media giant Bertelsmann.
