'The Revenant' is close to hitting the 1-billion-ruble mark.

The 5th Wave roared to the top of the Russian box office this past weekend, while The Revenant came close to becoming this year's first movie to gross the 1-billion-ruble mark.

J. Blakeson's action thriller grossed $1.9 million (150.3 million rubles) in its opening weekend in theaters, according to data from research company Movie Research.

It was followed by another new release, Dirty Grandpa, starring Robert De Niro, which took in $1.2 million (94.3 million rubles).

The Revenant slipped two positions to the third place. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s survival thriller added $1.1 million (87.5 million rubles) to its gross in its third weekend in theaters.

As the movie's total gross reached 993.4 million rubles ($12.6 million), it is likely to become the first movie to hit the 1-billion-ruble mark this year. Last year, only 11 movies were able to achieve that.

Local movie Status: Svoboden (Status: Free) opened in fourth place, grossing $1 million (80.1 million rubles). Pavel Ruminov's romantic comedy was co-produced by and stars Danila Kozlovsky, one of Russia's most popular younger actors.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip slipped two positions to fifth place. Walt Becker’s family animation film took in $828,000 (65.4 billion rubles) in its second weekend in Russian theaters, with the total gross reaching $2.8 million (218.9 million rubles).
