Russia Box Office: 'Now You See Me 2' Tops Chart With Strong $6.1M Bow

The sequel opened 23 percent ahead of the first movie.

Lionsgate's Now You See Me 2 debuted at the top of the Russian box office over the weekend.

Jon M. Chu's magic caper movie grossed $6.1 million, becoming the rare sequel that has done better than the original picture in Russian theaters over the last few months.

The sequel's performance was 23 percent better than the original Now You See Me, which was released in 2013.

Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows fell to No. 2, grossing $1.5 million in its second outing for a cume of $7.7 million.

Universal and Legendary video game adaptation Warcraft slipped to No. 3, taking in $1.3 million in its third frame for a gross of $19.9 million to date.

James Bobin's Alice Through the Looking Glass placed No. 4. The Disney sequel grossed $805,000 in its third frame for a total of $8.9 million.

The Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling mystery-buddy comedy The Nice Guys debuted at No. 5 with $383,000.
