Russia hits a bump in digital TV road

Switch-over details delayed until year-end

MOSCOW -- The adoption of Russia's state-funded program for the switch to digital TV, scheduled for completion in 2015, will have to be postponed, it was announced Wednesday.

The information technology and communication ministry, which was supposed to present all of the program's details this fall, said it needs until the end of the year.

The most crucial unsolved issue is whether all the population will be supplied with digital equipment free of charge, as earlier announced. Meanwhile, industry players say that technological challenges also may arise when it comes to switching 50 million households to digital.
