Russian TV reprieve in Ukraine

Channel One, Ren-TV may broadcast via cable

MOSCOW -- Ukraine’s National Council for Broadcasting decided on Wednesday to temporarily allow Russia’s Channel One and Ren-TV to be broadcast in the country via cable, as the controversy over Russian television in Ukraine continues.

The council reacted to the two channels’ requests to be allowed to broadcast, but did not specify when a permanent decision would be made.

Local authorities and parliaments in Ukraine’s Russian-speaking eastern part had opposed a regulation under which major Russian channels were prohibited in the country as of Nov. 1.
