Russia's Ren-TV buys local channel

Channel now owns 22 regional TV stations

MOSCOW -- The Russian national TV channel Ren-TV on Wednesday completed its acquisition of a TV station in Novosibirsk, the country's third-largest city.

The move is part of a scheme aimed at stepping up the channel's presence in the country's regions.

Ren-TV said that the acquisition of regional stations is in line with its development scheme, and the total number of stations the channel owns is now 22.

Ren-TV plans to launch broadcasting free-to-air on its own frequency in Novosibirsk in 2009. It currently operates there in partnership with a local channel.
