'Rust and Bone' Trailer: Marion Cotillard Swims With Whales (Video)

The French film has Oscar observers speculating the actress could be just the fifth woman to earn multiple nominations for foreign language performances.

Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenarts are lovers brought together by tragedy in the new trailer for Rust and Bone.

Cotillard plays as whale trainer, Stephanie, who loses her legs after an accident, while Schoenarts portrays a struggling single father and bare-knuckled boxer named Ali. The French film from director Jacques Audiard had its North American premiere over the weekend at the Telluride Film Festival, where it was well received.

Cotillard’s performance has awards season observers speculating she could become just the fifth woman to receive multiple foreign language Oscar nominations for acting. While there is no dialogue in the trailer, her performance comes through strong, especially in the portion that appears to take place after her accident.

In his positive review of the film, THR’s Todd McCarthy wrote: “Charged emotions are felt and expressed but remain contained and not wallowed in. When Stephanie awakens in the hospital after her accident and realizes what’s happened to her, the dreadfulness of her discovery is palpable. But soon enough it’s absorbed, to the point where she calls Ali to take her on an outing (to the Croisette in Cannes), where he takes her back into the water.”
