The feature adaptation of Nicola Yoon's best-selling novel is set to hit theaters May 17, 2019.

After tackling the big-screen adaptation of young adult novel Before I Fall, Ry Russo-Young will direct Yara Shahidi in The Sun Is Also a Star.

Based on the New York Times best-seller from Nicola Yoon, the film centers on Natasha (Shahidi), a girl in New York City whose pragmatism is challenged when she falls in love right before her family is set to be deported back to Jamaica.

MGM and Warner Bros. picked up the rights to Yoon's book after partnering for an adaptation of the author's debut, Everything, Everything. Amandla Stenberg and Nick Robinson starred in the teen romance that took in over $60 million at the box office on a $10 million budget.

“I'm the luckiest author alive and I couldn't be happier about the way this project is coming together," said Yoon. "I'm a big fan of Ry Russo-Young's work, especially Before I Fall and Nobody Walks. She's incredibly perceptive and smart. Her passion for this project is infectious and inspiring. I’m also thrilled for the perspective she brings as a female director. And then there's Yara Shahidi! Having her play Natasha is an absolute dream choice for me! Yara's such an incredibly talented and generous actress. She imbues her roles with warmth and intelligence and humor."

Scribe Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip) adapted the 2016 National Book Award Finalist for the screen. Les Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton will produce the project for Alloy Entertainment, after working with Warner Bros. and MGM on Everything, Everything

The Sun Is Also a Star is slated to hit theaters May 17, 2019.

Russo-Young's other credits include the indie drama Nobody Walks, which she directed and co-wrote with Lena Dunham. She is repped by CAA, Mosaic and Sloane Offer.
