Sam Smith First Artist to Sell 1M Albums in Both U.K. and U.S. in 2014
'In The Lonely Hour' has proved a hit on both sides of the Atlantic this year
Sam Smith's year just keeps getting better after the British singer became the first artist to pass 1 million album sales in both the U.S. and the U.K. in 2014.
Smith's debut In The Lonely Hour passed the 1 million sales milestone in the U.K. this week according to data from the Official Charts Company (OCC) cited by the Guardian. The album has already passed 1 million sales in the U.S.
Smith was "ecstatic" to hear the news and told the OCC: "Thank you so much to every single person who has purchased my album."
Smith follows Ed Sheeran as the second artist to pass 1 million album sales in 2014. Sheeran's X reached the milestone in November. Taylor Swift's 1989 also broke 1 million U.K. sales and all three will perform at the Brit Awards in February.
The Frozen soundtrack is the only other album that has broken the million sales figure in the U.K. this year.
